What is Somatic Sexology?

Somatic Sexology is an integrative approach to sexuality that honors the profound connection between body, mind, and emotions. Unlike traditional talk-based counseling alone, Somatic Sexology invites you to deepen awareness of your lived, bodily experience.

Grounded in evidence-based practices and informed by neuroscience, trauma awareness, and embodiment, Somatic Sexology creates space for clients to explore sexuality in safe, consent-based ways. Through guided exercises, mindfulness, and body-based learning, clients can discover new pathways to pleasure, re-pattern unhelpful habits, and build confidence in their authentic sexual expression.

At its core, Somatic Sexology is about presence. It is an invitation to reconnect with your body as a source of wisdom, healing, and joy. Whether you’re navigating trauma, seeking growth, or simply curious about deepening your understanding of yourself and others, Somatic Sexology offers tools and practices to support your journey.

A sex therapist is a licensed mental health practitioner who may specialize in specific sexual issues or concerns or work more broadly. Sex therapists often combine popular therapy techniques such as Gottman Method, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or Psychodynamic Therapy with sex positivity and sexual education.

A sexuality counselor is a professional who focuses on a narrower scope of specific sexual issues or concerns. Degrees and certifications may include backgrounds in psychology, counseling, and education, as well as specific training in human sexuality.

Each of these professionals may fall under the umbrella term of Sexologist. While there are no legal requirements to call oneself a Sexologist, a few things clients can look for when exploring options are board certification, relevant credentials, and educational experience.
